taking back the power of opera
For centuries, the opera and classical music industries have inspired so many to pursue the creation of art and beauty. However, these institutions have also played major roles in upholding systems of oppression, patriarchy, white supremacy, misogyny, homophobia, body shaming, and so much more. Young artist programs and major performance houses alike still discriminate and silence the voices of singers from marginalized groups.
Opera Uprising aims to speak truth to power by giving platforms to performers who are affected by inequity in our industry and are making waves of change in the performing arts. We aim to have honest conversations about the state of classical music, and how we as performers can be a part of the solution to these inequities and hold industry powers accountable.
